Cargo airport backers say negative study misses the point
The Louisiana Airport Authority, whose proposal for a massive cargo airport near Donaldsonville was panned by a feasibility study commissioned by state agencies, is putting together a response to be delivered to the governor and Louisiana Economic Development officials tomorrow. Weighing in will be SNC-Lavalin, a Canadian airport developer interested in building the project; URS Corp., LAA's consultant on the project; and First Southwest, LAA's financial consultant. LAA Chairman Glen Smith says the response from SNC-Lavalin, still being crafted, indicates that the Canadian developer is "way past" concerns raised in the LED-DOTD study, conducted by Wilbur Smith Associates. Nothing has changed from the Canadians' point of view, Smith says. John Spence, spokesman for the Canadian Commercial Corporation, a branch of the Canadian government that has guaranteed the airport project, says the CCC has a copy of the Wilbur Smith report, is monitoring the situation and "waiting to get some direction from LAA on the matter."
Glenda Jeansonne, LAA's executive director, says the Wilbur Smith study examined only a portion of the project and missed the point. "I don't think a four-week report put together by Wilbur Smith can discredit five years of very detailed studies and reports by the No. 1 airport planner in the world." URS Corporation, LAA's consultant on the project, is one of the world's top engineering and design firms, specializing in transportation. (Steve Clark)
